Whistling Oaks Kikos was started in 2018 on a small 6 acre tract of land in rural west Tennessee. After originally purchasing 3 goats to help eliminate kudzu in 1998 we grew fond of goats and started a small Nigerian Dwarf herd. Having raised ND’s for a while it became obvious to be successful we needed to change our model. Our search led us to the Kiko breed. Working full-time jobs its critical that our herd be self-sufficient and able to withstand daily pressure with limited input. Our herd has grown from 1 buck and three 100% New Zealand does. Currently we have 13 New Zealand does and 2 bucks. We have increased the size of our farm as well from the original 6 acres to over 25 acres to supply our herd quality browse. Our herd is comprised of quality breeding stock from top notch breeders. Quality bloodlines include: GHK ISAIAH’S FIRE, RING LEADER, RDH STRIKE GOLD, ECR ROHO GRANDE, COO IRON HORSE, GHK JACK FLASH, SCR PIERS BEAR. ECR ALEXANDER, GHK CHEROKEE FIDDLER, SSK WAR HORSE, BLUE’S SON, TTP HAMMER’S MEGAWATT, TTP BLUE’S TRAVELER (BT), MRG OUTLAW, CGI SPITFIRE, TAY ONYX, and LEN 8. Our goal is to develop quality breeding stock through the development of specific qualities. We first demand that our does be excellent mothers. They should kid without assistance and provide care for their newborns immediately after kidding. A doe that ignores her kids is quickly eliminated from our herd because we don’t want those qualities passed on or shared with other breeders. We strive for outstanding parasite resistance from our bucks and does. We only worm on an as needed basis. Keeping watch on our herds physical condition and performing random FAMACHA scores is critical to achieve this success. If an animal is affected by parasites we take quick action to address and provide the affected animal with support to overcome the infestation. Worms are a part of goat farming but we raise kikos because of their parasite resistance. If an animal if repeatedly affected by parasites we work to remove them from our herd to prevent passing along poor genetics. Finally we strive to develop kids that grow fast and mothers that produce sufficient milk to make this happen. It’s critical that our kids grow-out quickly and be ready for market in 5 – 6 months. After all we are raising meat goats and providing quality meat is the ultimate goal.
